The group consisted of farmers from countries such as Fiji, Tonga, Timor-Leste, Samoa, and the Solomon Islands, representing various industries including sugar, organic cotton, vanilla, and ginger.
Daniel Kinne, a second-generation coffee grower from Papua New Guinea, emphasized the value of Fairtrade certification in providing stability during market fluctuations. He highlighted the dual benefits of Fairtrade pricing, ensuring a fair income for farmers and enabling community development projects. Kinne’s cooperative in Papua New Guinea has utilized Fairtrade profits to enhance education, infrastructure, and access to clean water in their remote region.
Molly Harriss Olson, CEO of Fairtrade Australia New Zealand, emphasized the role of Fairtrade in empowering producers to take control of their livelihoods. By setting minimum pricing standards and promoting ethical practices, Fairtrade enables small-scale producers to become sustainable businesses that benefit their communities.
Sean McGowan, a representative from Montville Coffee, emphasized the importance of Fairtrade certification in guaranteeing ethical and transparent production processes.
