Almond Breeze Barista Blend and BaristasforBaristas.com recently unveiled the Australian Barista Census (ABC), shedding light on the concerns of baristas and Australia’s global coffee scene dominance. The study revealed that the majority of Australian baristas are employed in independent cafes, showcasing a unique coffee culture compared to the United States. This distinction was emphasized by 84% of baristas expressing a preference to work in Australia over anywhere else.
Since the official recognition of barista as a profession in 2006, the occupation has witnessed significant growth in Australia. With a rise of 72% from 2011 to 2016, the country now adds 3,100 new baristas annually to its thriving coffee community, totaling around 40,000 individuals. Australian baristas are influential figures, serving more than four in five Australians weekly.
Baristas in Australia are known for their adaptability and innovation, setting global standards in the industry. The qualitative research highlighted the necessity for baristas to embrace change and explore new concepts to excel in the Australian market. Notably, 96% of cafes in Australia offer alternative milks, demonstrating a commitment to diversity and sustainability.
Despite their prowess, Australian baristas face challenges such as the increasing automation in the industry, with 40% expressing concerns about technological advancements. Additionally, 20% of baristas indicated uncertainty about accessing further training, with existing courses sometimes falling short in preparing them adequately.
Moreover, the census revealed that many baristas feel unsupported in various aspects of their work. Over half of them experience stress and fatigue due to the demanding nature of the job, while concerns about work-related injuries and low wages are prevalent issues. This underscores the need for external support to nurture and empower the barista workforce.
Michael McNulty, Almond Breeze Country Manager for Australia and New Zealand, emphasized the importance of external support in fostering the growth and innovation of Australia’s coffee industry. Despite the challenges, 79% of baristas feel valued in their roles, with a majority envisioning a future within the industry.
Baristas play a pivotal role in shaping their customers’ experiences, with 96% expressing satisfaction in positively impacting people’s days. The strong bond between baristas and customers was evident, as customers were found to significantly influence the baristas’ daily experiences and sense of pride in their craft.
The Australian Barista Census not only sheds light on the challenges faced by baristas but also celebrates their dedication and passion for coffee. The inaugural National Barista Day in March 2019 provided a platform to honor outstanding baristas, recognizing their contributions to the vibrant coffee culture in Australia.
As the coffee industry continues to evolve, initiatives like BaristasforBaristas.com aim to provide the necessary resources and support to empower baristas and drive the industry forward. With a strong foundation and a commitment to excellence, Australian baristas are poised to lead the global coffee scene with creativity and resilience.
