While developed countries like Australia and New Zealand have robust infrastructure and social systems that support domestic farmers, Fairtrade focuses on regions where farmers face significant challenges. Fairtrade Australia New Zealand concentrates on promoting fair treatment for farmers globally, particularly in the Pacific region.
The organization’s efforts extend to approximately 24,000 farmers in countries such as Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, and the Solomon Islands. These farmers are part of 19 different producer organizations engaged in cultivating various products like coffee beans, cocoa, sugarcane, ginger, and vanilla. Fairtrade ANZ has dedicated local staff in Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste, and Fiji to support these farming communities.
In Fiji, Fairtrade ANZ collaborates with three producer organizations focusing on sugarcane and ginger farming. The initiatives aim to enhance farming sustainability, improve governance, promote gender equality, and ensure child safety within these farming communities.
Papua New Guinea, an island nation in the Pacific, is known for its diverse landscapes, including mountains, plains, and active volcanoes. Fairtrade ANZ is actively engaged with PNG, supporting various programs to enhance coffee quality, gender equality, access to markets, income diversification, sustainable farming practices, and water security.
In Timor-Leste, Fairtrade ANZ works with three coffee producer organizations, providing training on coffee quality, promoting gender equality, and facilitating market access. The organization also collaborates with farmers on income diversification, sustainable farming methods, and water resource management.
