A recent study has raised concerns about a potential link between instant coffee consumption and the risk of developing degenerative eye diseases, particularly age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Chinese researchers have highlighted that regular consumption of instant coffee may lead to blurred and distorted central vision, affecting individuals’ ability to read and recognize objects.
Age-related macular degeneration is a condition that causes the breakdown of parts of the retina, impacting vision. The study suggests that the way instant coffee is produced, leading to the release of acrylamide, a chemical that can enter the bloodstream and harm the retina, might be a contributing factor to the development of AMD.
Dr. Qi Jia, the study director and an ophthalmologist, emphasized that individuals at high risk of AMD should avoid instant coffee to reduce their susceptibility to the disease. Factors such as being overweight, smoking, and high blood pressure can further exacerbate the correlation between instant coffee consumption and AMD.
The research, which utilized data from the UK Biobank and the FinnGen consortium, investigated how individuals’ genetic predispositions could influence their coffee preferences and tolerance to caffeine. Results indicated that those who preferred instant coffee were significantly more likely to be diagnosed with dry or wet AMD, compared to those who did not consume instant coffee.
Dry AMD involves the deterioration of the macula, leading to vision loss, while wet AMD is characterized by abnormal blood vessel growth under the macula. Participants in the study were diagnosed with AMD after their 50th birthday by healthcare professionals, with no known cure for the condition currently available.
While previous studies have suggested that coffee consumption could have protective effects on vision, the new findings underscore the potential risks associated with consuming instant coffee in relation to eye health. Researchers stressed the need for further investigation to confirm the study’s outcomes and implications.
It is essential for individuals, especially those at higher risk of AMD, to be mindful of their instant coffee intake and consider alternative coffee options that may have fewer detrimental effects on eye health. The study’s insights provide valuable information for both consumers and healthcare professionals in understanding the potential impact of instant coffee consumption on vision and overall well-being.
