Melbourne, known for its vibrant café culture and high-quality espresso drinks, has introduced a new coffee trend called the Mont Blanc. This fragrant and slightly sweet drink made its debut in 2022 at Good Measure, a popular café in the city. The Mont Blanc features cold brew topped with a thick layer of cream, fresh orange zest, and grated nutmeg, creating a visually appealing and trendy drink that quickly gained popularity.
With Good Measure serving about 800 Mont Blancs a day on weekends, the drink’s fame spread across Australia and eventually caught the attention of coffee shops worldwide. U.S.-based cafés like Little Joy in Northfield, Minn., have embraced the Mont Blanc trend, incorporating it into their menus. Owner Cody Larson found the drink intriguing due to its appearance, aligning with industry trends of adding cold foam or cream to beverages. Larson noted that the Mont Blanc’s Instagrammable quality and unique flavor profile contributed to its popularity.
To create the Mont Blanc at Little Joy, Larson infuses cream with orange peels and sugar to make an orange oleo sacrum, enhancing the drink’s citrus notes. The cream is whipped with heavy cream, skim milk, and vanilla, creating a dense and flavorful topping. Larson recommends using a fruit-forward coffee bean variety for the cold brew base, enhancing the drink’s overall taste profile.
The final Mont Blanc at Little Joy is served by pouring cold brew over ice and topping it with the orange-vanilla cream, garnished with fresh orange zest and grated nutmeg. This layered presentation and aromatic elements have made the Mont Blanc a standout item on the café’s summer menu, becoming one of the most popular drinks among patrons.
As the coffee industry continues to embrace flavorful and visually appealing beverages, the Mont Blanc’s success suggests that similar trends may emerge in coffee shops around the world. With its combination of creamy textures, aromatic accents, and social media appeal, the Mont Blanc is poised to make its mark in the global coffee scene, offering a unique and indulgent experience for coffee enthusiasts.
