Nestlé’s Nescafé has made significant strides in sustainable coffee sourcing, surpassing its target by a substantial margin. In 2024, Nescafé sourced almost a third of its coffee from farmers practicing regenerative agriculture, well exceeding the company’s initial goal of 20% by 2025. This achievement was unveiled alongside the Nescafé Plan 2030 Progress Report, outlining the brand’s commitment to investing over $1 billion in sustainable coffee farming by 2030.
The Nescafé Plan 2030 places a strong emphasis on supporting farmers in transitioning to regenerative agriculture methods. These practices focus on mitigating the environmental impact of farming by enhancing soil health, reducing emissions, managing watersheds, and promoting biodiversity. By adopting techniques like optimized fertilization, soil cover, mulching, and composting, Nescafé aims to boost productivity and cut costs for coffee farmers.
Furthermore, the shift to regenerative agriculture has led to a notable decrease in greenhouse gas emissions. Participants in the Nescafé Plan achieved reductions ranging from 20% to 40% in greenhouse gas emissions per kilogram of green coffee in 2024. This not only benefits the environment but also contributes to creating more climate-resilient soils and improving farmers’ livelihoods.
With the initial target surpassed, Nescafé is now setting its sights on a new goal: to source 50% of its coffee from farms practicing regenerative agriculture by 2030. Currently, the plan covers over 400,000 hectares of coffee farmlands, with more than 200,000 coffee farmers across 16 countries receiving training in regenerative agriculture in 2024.
Axel Touzet, Head of Nestlé’s Coffee Brands Strategic Business Unit, emphasized the importance of regenerative agriculture in building resilience within the coffee supply chain. He highlighted the increasing adoption rates among farmers and expressed the company’s commitment to continuing its collaborative efforts with partners, suppliers, and farmers to drive sustainable practices in coffee sourcing.
Nescafé’s achievements in sustainable coffee sourcing reflect a growing trend in the industry towards environmental responsibility and ethical sourcing practices. As consumer awareness of sustainability issues continues to rise, companies like Nestlé are under increasing pressure to demonstrate their commitment to sustainable practices throughout their supply chains.
Experts in the field of sustainable agriculture applaud Nescafé’s efforts to promote regenerative farming practices. By investing in initiatives that not only benefit the environment but also support the livelihoods of coffee farmers, Nescafé is setting a positive example for the industry.
Looking ahead, the success of Nescafé’s sustainable coffee farming initiatives serves as a beacon for other companies seeking to enhance their sustainability efforts. As the demand for ethically sourced products grows, businesses must adapt and embrace sustainable practices to meet consumer expectations and contribute to a greener, more sustainable future.
