Three new sustainability programs have recently gained recognition for their alignment with the Coffee Sustainability Reference Code (Coffee SR Code), a framework established by the Global Coffee Platform. These programs, including CONNECT by Hamburg Coffee Company HACOFCO mbh, LEGACY Protocol by Minasul, and Sucden Coffee Verified by Sucden, have been acknowledged as equivalent to the Coffee SR Code through second-party assurance.
The Coffee SR Code serves as a simplified framework aimed at enhancing sustainable coffee production by providing stakeholders with a clear set of principles. The approval of second-party assurance for these three schemes signifies their adherence to the Coffee SR Code, emphasizing the importance of shared sustainability practices within the coffee sector.
Annette Pensel, the Executive Director of GCP, expressed satisfaction in welcoming these new schemes into the community utilizing the Coffee SR Code as a common language for sustainability. She highlighted the significance of aligning around shared principles to drive meaningful progress in the sector.
The recognition of these sustainability schemes followed a thorough assessment process known as the GCP Equivalence Mechanism, which evaluates schemes based on economic, social, and environmental criteria outlined in the Coffee SR Code. Pensel commended the commitment of these GCP members for aligning with the Code, emphasizing their role in advancing sustainability within the coffee industry.
With the addition of these three programs, the number of GCP-recognized sustainability schemes has now reached 30, with 26 of them being second-party assured. The Global Coffee Platform has been actively advocating for a unified approach to sustainability in the sector, aiming to establish a shared vision and language for coffee sustainability.
Experts in the field have noted the growing trend towards industry-wide alignment on sustainability practices, signaling a shift towards integrating foundational sustainability principles throughout the coffee value chain. This collective effort to promote sustainability within the coffee business reflects a broader industry movement towards a more sustainable future.
