A recent study conducted by Hey You for the Daily Brew Report 2025 in partnership with WestPac highlighted the nation’s growing expenditure on coffee, with Western Australia leading the charge in escalating prices. The state witnessed a substantial 10.66% increase in coffee prices, with residents now spending an average of $4.95 per cup, placing WA as the second most expensive region for coffee consumption after Tasmania.
While coffee remains an integral part of Australian daily routines, the rise in prices has led to an increase in overall spending at cafes, with individuals shelling out an average of $85 per month on coffee purchases. The study revealed that cappuccinos remain a popular choice nationwide, except in WA, where the flat white reigns supreme. Similarly, Victoria also deviates from the national trend by favoring lattes.
Asheesh Chacko, co-chief executive of Hey You, noted that the café culture reflects broader economic trends, indicating that despite the cost-of-living pressures, people continue to prioritize small luxuries like their morning coffee. He emphasized that the evolving coffee consumption patterns now emphasize quality over quantity, with consumers willing to pay more for a premium coffee experience.
Andy Tseng, co-founder of Andune Coffee Studio in Wembley and a three-time latte art champion in WA and SA, highlighted how escalating coffee prices have prompted individuals to invest more in home brewing equipment. Tseng noted a growing trend towards high-end coffee pots, emphasizing the shift towards quality and the ability to create barista-quality coffee at home.
