A riverside café in Woodburn has recently made a surprising move by lowering the price of its coffee, much to the delight of its loyal customers. Hemlocks Bookshop & Coffeehouse, owned by Candice McLaughlin, decided to reduce the cost of a cup of coffee from $4.70 to $4.50 as a gesture to brighten everyone’s day amidst the current climate.
Candice expressed her excitement about the decision, acknowledging the unconventional move but emphasizing the positive feedback received from patrons. She reassured that despite the price drop, the café would find ways to manage expenses to sustain the affordability of their coffee offerings in the foreseeable future.
To further enhance customer satisfaction, Hemlocks introduced a loyalty program where customers can earn a free cup of coffee after purchasing seven. Candice, with a rich background in hospitality spanning 15 years, took over the café after working there for a year and previously gaining experience at various establishments in the Northern Rivers region.
The café’s origins trace back to Samuel Allis, who established Hemlocks following the 2022 floods. Earlier this year, Samuel passed the torch to Candice to pursue his passion for coffee roasting under the mentorship of renowned coffee expert Gerard Dwyer. Hemlocks now sources its coffee from Samuel’s Rainforest Roastery, ensuring a continuation of quality and community values.
Reflecting the café’s ethos of community engagement, affordability, and consistency, the revised coffee prices and loyalty program embody Hemlocks’ commitment to its customers. For those seeking a quick caffeine fix, Hemlocks offers the convenience of ordering ahead by phone, catering to the needs of busy patrons in the area.
With a focus on providing not just coffee but a welcoming space for book lovers, Hemlocks also features a selection of secondhand books for sale, creating a unique ambiance that combines literary charm with aromatic coffee delights. The café’s evolution under Candice’s stewardship underscores a dedication to enhancing the customer experience while staying true to its roots in the local community.
