The coffee industry is notorious for its high failure rates, especially for independent coffee shops. However, a new initiative called the Coffee Futures Fund aims to change that narrative by providing funding and mentorship to small coffee businesses in exchange for a percentage of revenue.
Launching at the upcoming SCA Expo, the Coffee Futures Fund has opened applications for its 2025 summer cohort, targeting businesses that are between one and three years old. The program includes a 10-week business development and mentorship program, followed by a one-year mentorship with industry professionals.
Unlike traditional venture capital firms, the Coffee Futures Fund focuses on long-term success rather than rapid growth. It offers a supportive environment for emerging businesses in the coffee industry, with the goal of increasing their chances of success.

At the end of the program, participants pitch their businesses to mentors and industry veterans, with the opportunity to receive up to $50,000 in funding. In return, the Coffee Futures Fund takes a fixed percentage of annual revenue for four years, without asking for equity.

The fund boasts a diverse mentorship board comprised of industry experts and business owners, including Madcap Coffee Founder Trevor Corlett and past World Barista Champion Dale Harris. This team provides invaluable guidance and support to the program participants.

Founder Akshat Khandelwal drew inspiration from successful startup accelerators in other industries when designing the Coffee Futures Fund. By combining elements from various models, he tailored the program to suit the unique needs of coffee shop owners.
Applications for the Summer 2025 cohort are now open, with a deadline of April 30. Khandelwal envisions a future where the majority of coffee shops not only survive but thrive, thanks to the support and resources provided by the Coffee Futures Fund.
The initiative represents a significant shift in the coffee industry, offering a lifeline to small businesses that often struggle to compete with larger chains. By fostering a culture of collaboration and mentorship, the Coffee Futures Fund aims to create a more sustainable and vibrant coffee community.
With the backing of industry veterans and a clear mission to support small business growth, the Coffee Futures Fund is poised to make a meaningful impact on the future of the coffee industry. By investing in the success of emerging coffee shops, the fund is paving the way for a more diverse and resilient coffee market.
