Australia’s Single O, a specialty coffee group based in Sydney, recently achieved B Corp certification, marking a significant milestone in its sustainability journey. With an impressive B Impact Score of 90.7, the company is now focused on reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2030.
The two-year journey towards B Corp certification underscores Single O’s dedication to fair pay for farmers, waste reduction initiatives, and adoption of green energy practices. The company’s commitment to single origin coffee sourcing, community engagement, and waste reduction efforts at its roastery and coffee shops played a pivotal role in this achievement.
Established in 2003 with its first café in Sydney, Single O has expanded to operate three coffee shops and a green energy-powered roastery in its home market. The company further expanded its footprint to Japan in 2014, where it now runs four coffee shops and a roastery, making it the brand’s sole international market.
Single O’s sustainable practices include paying coffee farmers well above the Commodity Price, utilizing energy-efficient brewing systems like the Freepour Coffee On Tap, and using 100% home compostable coffee bags. These initiatives have significantly contributed to the company’s goal of reducing carbon emissions by half across its Australian operations by 2026.
By offsetting over 8,100 tonnes of CO2-e between 2020-2023 and implementing innovative solutions like the Juggler milk dispensing system, Single O has made substantial strides in reducing its environmental impact. The company’s initiatives have also led to the diversion of over 100 million plastic milk bottles from landfills.
As a B Corp certified entity, Single O joins a select group of businesses that meet rigorous standards in social and environmental performance. The certification process evaluates companies across five key impact areas: governance, workers, community, environment, and customers.
In addition to its Australian operations, Single O is actively pursuing B Corp certifications for its operations in Japan. The company’s commitment to sustainability aligns it with over 550 B Corp-certified businesses in Australia, including renowned names like Sample Coffee Roasters, Market Lane, and Nomad Coffee Group.
Globally, there are over 9,600 B Corp-certified companies, highlighting a growing trend towards sustainable and socially responsible business practices. Single O’s B Corp certification not only validates its commitment to sustainability but also positions it as a leader in the evolving landscape of responsible business operations.
